In January 2011, when the $26 billion merger plan between Duke Energy and Progress Energy was announced -- a merger to create the largest electric utility in the U.S. -- Duke Chairman and CEO Jim Rogers told analysts and media he was content having Progress CEO Bill Johnson run the combined company.

But a mere minutes after the merger closed on July 3, 2012, unwilling to take a backseat to the superior leader, Rogers completed his palace coup within the Duke board of directors, finalizing his efforts to oust Johnson from the newly combined company.

Anyone who has ever worked for or with Johnson -- understanding his unquestioned leadership, spirit, character, and integrity -- was deeply hurt by the deceitful actions of Rogers and the Duke board.
