I first met Bill about 11 years ago during the early days of the Florida Progress/CP&L Energy merger. Being a former Florida Progress employee, I moved my family to Raleigh after being offered a job at the Corporate Headquarters. My responsibilities included the Progress Energy Ethics Program. As such I met with Bill and other members of senior management to discuss our ethics program, code of ethics, ethics cases, etc.
I will never forget my first meeting with Bill. He treated me like an equal and actually made me feel that he valued my opinion. His sense of humor was infectious. We also worked together on a corporate governance policy. I always looked forward to meeting with him. I learned something new every time.
In the years since, I moved my family back to Florida and lost contact with Bill until one of his employee meetings earlier this year. I had some direct questions for him relating to the merger. While we basically agreed to disagree on some things, he will always have my respect.
